Ashanti’s Story

Ashanti is a 16-year-old girl experiencing autism, learning difficulties, and a global developmental delay. She lives with her mother, Liz, and her older brother, Prince. She has a vibrant personality and enjoys listening to music, going on walks, and playing on her iPad. Additionally, Ashanti loves participating in household tasks, like cooking, doing laundry, and using the dishwasher.

Ashanti experienced behavioural and social challenges that made interacting with other people difficult. She often felt anxious in social situations, especially in crowded environments or when surrounded by many people. Additionally, Ashanti found it challenging to adapt to changes in her routine and manage everyday risks, such as crossing the road safely.

Ashanti’s care plan was designed to support her personal development, foster her well-being and reduce behaviours of concern while ensuring she has a voice in her care.

The Approach

Ashanti’s support workers, Bea and Ivan, placed a strong emphasis on establishing stable routines and providing proactive, person-centred support. They focused on understanding her unique needs and preferences, building trust over time, and consistently integrating her into the community. This personalised approach helped Ashanti to manage her behavioural challenges better and significantly improved her well-being.

By maintaining a structured routine and regularly monitoring and adjusting her care plan, Ashanti made remarkable progress in her personal development. The proactive care and close collaboration between Ashanti’s support team and family were central to reducing behaviours of concern and achieving a more stable, fulfilling daily life.

The Results

With the right support, Ashanti’s quality of life improved. One of the most significant outcomes has been the reduction in Ashanti’s behaviours of concern. She has become more independent and integrated in the community, and developed the confidence to go shopping by herself.
A notable milestone was Ashanti’s successful trip to Dubai with her family, where she was calm and enjoyed new experiences. Ashanti’s routine is well-established, which is crucial for her well-being. Bea and Ivan, Ashanti’s support workers, have supported her in developing strict routines and fostering her personal development.

Looking ahead, the goal is to continue supporting Ashanti’s well-being and helping her achieve her dreams.
